Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 - 11/1/05
Our testing has found no incompatibilities with Windows Server 2003 after applying Service Pack 1. Following the instructions in our technote here will allow cross-platform sharing of a C&P database. Testing was performed on a fresh install of Windows Server 2003 (pre-SP1), then by updating to SP1. No modifications to the server were necessary to maintain cross-platform access.
OS X Server (Tiger) Update 10.4.2 - 7/13/05
Despite claims of fixes for "file sharing using AFP and SMB/CIFS network file services" in 10.4.2, OS X Server still will not host a multi-user database whether all-Mac or a mixed-environment. Single users can connect, but additional users will receive a padlock. Previous versions os OS X Server (Jaguar, Panther) should continue to work in single-platform environments.
Server recommendations can be found here.
OS X 10.4 (Tiger) - posted 4/25/05
Our testing with pre-release versions of Tiger have shown it to not yet be 100% compatible with C&P X. For more information, see the System Manager News page at www.cnp-x.com.
6/10/05 Note:our testing has determined no incompatibilities between version 5 and Tiger.
Apple servers and Windows XP SP2 - posted 3/7/05
According to numerous reports at Macwindows here, XP SP2 Security Update 885250 can cause problems connecting to either OS X Server or AppleShare IP. Our own testing was unable to find issues related to OS X Server, but did experience the inability to connect to AppleShare IP servers. Removing the update will alleviate the problem, but does cause a security vulnerability in Windows. More information on the security update available here.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 - posted 7/29/04
Testing with the public beta release of Windows XP Service Pack 2 has demonstrated no visible incompatibilities with Clients & Profits. SP2 was installed on a brand new Dell Dimension 2400 (P4 2.66, 256MB) running Windows XP Professional.
Test databases were housed on AppleShareIP (6.3.3), Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4, and OS X Server (10.3.4) servers. Multiple connections were established using Windows XP SP1, SP2, and OS X.3.4 workstations on each server platform. The only exception was PC-only testing on OS X Server, due to the current cross-platform incompatibility with that server software. On each platform, data was entered and verified from the other workstations (specifically in the calendar and job ticket areas).
Do note that at this time, Service Pack 2 has not been officially released and this testing is only a preliminary test of compatibility.
Post-release note:Further testing has not determined any incompatibilities between XP SP 2 and Clients & Profits.
Cross-Platform Sharing - posted 6/10/04
Now available is a step-by-step tech note on setting up a Windows Server (Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server) for cross-platform access. Following these instructions will allow OS 9, OS X, and Windows clients to simultaneously access your database. The tech note can be found here: Cross-Platform Tech Note.
OS X Server 10.3.3 (Panther) - posted 3/19/04
Recent testing has shown OS X Server to continue to exhibit cross-platform networking difficulties. OS X Server is only recommended as a server solution for all-Mac shops. Also, make sure that any OS X machines connect via AFP (rather than SMB), or else access to the file will be denied. Note: testing was performed on a single-processor G4 Xserve.
OS X 10.3 (Panther) - posted 12/2/03
Apple's newest operating system, Panther, has been satisfactorily tested for compatibility with Clients & Profits. Testing was done using OS X 10.3.1(using the classic environment 9.2.2) and involved databases residing on servers running AppleShareIP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000 Server.
OS X 10.3 (Panther) Server - posted 10/9/03
Testing on the beta-release version of Mac OS X 10.3 Server ("Panther") demonstrated no combatibility problems with recent versions of Clients & Profits. There was no noticeable change in the server's performance when accessing a C&P database. Mac OS X 10.3 still does not support cross-platform access to a shared file, so shops with both Macs and PCs need to use a Windows server.
Windows Server 2003 - posted 9/30/03
Microsoft's newest server software has been tested successfully for compatibility with Clients & Profits. Testing included clients using Windows XP, 2000 (SP4), 98, OS X, and OS 9. Server 2003 looks to be a stable and robust cross-platform option for hosting your C&P database.
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 - posted 9/22/03
Internal testing has determined that the issue preventing Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 clients from connecting to databases shared on AppleShare IP servers no longer exists in Service Pack 4. Windows 2000 users remaining in Service Pack 2 for the AppleShare IP compatibility are encouraged to upgrade to Service Pack 4 to take advantage of numerous security updates and other fixes.
Mac OS X 10.2.4 and SMB - posted 3/27/03
From www.macwindows.com:
Reader verifies SMB file locking issue in Mac OS X 10.2.4. March 26, 2003 -- Jørgen Straarup responded to Monday's report that file-locking on Windows 2000 SP3 servers doesn't work when Mac access them with SMB. He said "Yes, we have the same problems. We can't use our 10.2.4 server."
My Clients & Profits! on Safari - posted 2/2/03
Our recent testing of the My Clients & Profits! web server on the pre-release version of Apple's new browser for Mac OS X, Safari, was successful. Both seem to work well together on the most commonly used My C&P! features, including adding time and reviewing jobs. Safari's overall speed seems faster than Internet Explorer on My Clients & Profits!, too. We're continuing to work with it.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 - posted 9/30/02
Some Windows 2000 users have reported problems opening a shared database from an AppleShare IP server after installing Service Pack 3 . After starting Clients & Profits and selecting the database, this error appears "<Database Path> is in use elsewhere and cannot be shared" and they're prompted to open a different database. This error occurs if the database is already opened by other Clients & Profits users. Connecting from a Windows 2000 SP3 workstation to a Windows server works fine. The problem is being reviewed now.

Mac OS X - updated 11/18/02
Defective add-on memory cards may be causing corruption problems on Macs that run OS X, according to www.macintouch.com. Apparently, Mac OS X is more sensitive to bad RAM that OS 9, causing "kernal panics" that possibly corrupt entire hard drives. The solution seems to be replacing the suspect RAM with new ones. Since Clients & Profits is a disk-based, any problems with corruption under Mac OS X would seriously affect its database.
The Mac OS X 10.2-compatible version of Clients & Profits is available now. This upgrade runs as a "classic" application under Mac OS X v10.2 only (previous versions of OS X will damage your database). The new Clients & Profits 5.0 upgrade is also Mac OS X compatible.
The Clients & Profits/Mac OS X tech note describes the history of the compatibility problems, its solution, and the testing performed to verify its performance. For more information, check these sites:
Mac OS X Server v10.2 - updated 11/18/02
The new Mac OS X Server v10.2 (including the latest update, 10.2.2) won't support cross-platform access to the Clients & Profits database. If your database is running on a Mac OS X server, opening the database from Windows and Mac workstations will cause data corruption. This is because Macs use the Apple File Protocol ("AFP") and Windows users Samba ("SMB") to handle file sharing. Unfortunately, in Mac OS X Server the two protocols ignore each other.
In other file servers (i.e., Windows 2000, AppleShare IP), these two protocols coexist to support cross-platform access to a shared database. So if a database is running on an AppleShare IP, Windows or NetWare server, a mix of Mac OS X, OS 9, and Windows workstations can access a shared database correctly as long as the Macs are connecting via AFP, not SMB.
If your database is running on Mac OS X Server, then all your Mac clients must connect to it via AFP.
Code Red worm and My Clients & Profits! -
The recent, highly publicized Code Red worm attacks any web server listening on Port 80, which means the My Clients & Profits! web server is affected by these attacks. Recently, a number of My Clients & Profits! web administrators reported the following error message:
-1183 Web Enabler : Received HTTP report does not contain the HTTP version
which indicates the server was being attacked by the Code Red worm. Since the Code Red worm only damages Windows 2000 or Windows NT servers running Microsoft's Internet Information Services, other web applications (such as My Clients & Profits!) are not affected.
