Mac Mini
If you have a spare monitors, mice, and keyboards around, the new
Mac Mini
is a great cost and space-effective upgrade. Be aware that it ships with
a low 256MB of ram. More can be added as an option, but it's costly. Aftermarket
ram can be added (replacing the factory-installed ram since there's only
one slot), but the case is not easily user-serviceable (requires a putty
knife to open).
PowerBook G4
The new PowerBook
has no significant drawbacks despite its small size, and
its multimedia capabilities are just about the best you
can expect from a small notebook.
Xserve RAID
Xserve RAID
is an industry breakthrough product, offering up to 2.5TB of high-performance
redundant storage at just over $4 per gigabyte -- a fraction of the cost
of storage from Dell, HP, Sun or EMC. Xserve RAID features dual independent
RAID controllers for redundant storage, a dual 2Gb Fibre Channel interface
for ultra-high performance and dual power supplies for peace of mind,
all starting at $5,999. Clients & Profits does not currently work
with Apple OS X server in a cross-platform environment, but should be
fine for all-Mac shops.
Chip paths diverge at Intel
Desktop and notebook processors will start to go
their separate ways with the introduction of two new chip
families that Intel
will tout this month at its Developer Forum. During the
four-day conference in San Jose, Calif., the company will
provide further details on Prescott, a successor to the
Pentium 4, coming later this year, as well as the
Pentium-M, a new type of notebook chip debuting March
12.
HP's Intel server
Hewlett-Packard has begun selling two important new
products, servers with eight Intel Xeon processors. The
new systems, the ProLiant
DL760 and DL740,
have arrived to replace an elderly model that Compaq
Computer introduced in 1999.
